The Start of an Epic Journey: Steven Webb Embarks on the Cornwall 500

It’s September 1, 2024—a poignant date, marking 33 years to the day since Steven Webb’s life changed forever in a diving accident just a stone’s throw from where his journey begins today. But rather than reflecting on what he lost, Steven is focused on what he’s about to achieve: becoming the first person to complete the Cornwall 500.

With an electric wheelchair, determination, and a heart full of gratitude, Steven is setting out on a gruelling 500-mile challenge around Cornwall. This isn’t just about completing miles—it’s about raising money for the Cornwall Air Ambulance, the service that saved his life on this very day 33 years ago. It’s also about celebrating Cornwall’s beauty, history, and culture, leaving behind a legacy for generations to explore.

The atmosphere at The Alverton Hotel this morning was electric. Steven was joined by dignitaries including Jayne Kirkham, the new Labour MP for Truro and Falmouth, and Carol Swain, the mayor of Truro, along with a host of supporters, friends, and well-wishers. They gathered not only to cheer him on but to witness a moment in history—the official start of the Cornwall 500.

Steven, ever the visionary, is making this challenge even more unique by towing a replica helicopter of the Cornwall Air Ambulance. This incredible piece of craftsmanship was created by Paul from Mackerel Bus and serves as a striking reminder of the vital service he’s raising funds for.

Before hitting the road, Steven made a special delivery: the very first Cornwall 500 plaque. In a fitting tribute, it was presented to Paul, the manager of The Alverton Hotel, the place where this ambitious journey began. These plaques, marking points of interest across Cornwall, will serve as the foundation of a legacy that invites others to explore the region in their own way.

Reflecting on the challenge ahead, Steven shared:
“When I sat down with Clive Kessell with a crazy idea, I knew that within 12 months I would be starting a challenge. The idea was all his, and I get to see Cornwall at a pace very few have, to see places I’ve never been to despite living here all my life. And to raise money for the Cornwall Air Ambulance that saved my life 33 years ago to this day. It’s like a fairytale, and it writes itself. I have to go, otherwise, I’m going to be crying my eyes out.”

At exactly 10:30 AM, after the last photographs and farewells, Steven set off. The crowd’s cheers carried him forward as he began the first leg of his 28-day journey, covering between 25 and 30 miles each day.

The turnout was incredible, a testament to the support and admiration Steven has inspired. His vision for the Cornwall 500 is more than a challenge—it’s a legacy that will shine brightly for years to come.

The weather is good, the time for talking has passed, and now it’s time for action. As Steven says, “Let’s do this.”
